Essence of a Boat House

One of the most enduring and classic colour combinations must be the Canadian Boat House theme of red, white & blue. Combined with plenty of natural timber, linen and a sea view it is an intoxicating mixture. Nowhere else demonstrates it better than the boutique hotel in Stockholm, Hotel J

Hotel J lies on the shores of the Baltic but only a ten minute boat ride from the centre of Stockholm. Inspired by the J boats of the America's Cup history, the interior of the renovated 1912 brick building is reminiscent of a Newport boat house. Filled with GANT linen, plenty of solid oak, walls painted in flat matt deep blue and white, red wool throws and roaring fires, I can see why it has earned its top place in the Design Hotels list.

Being such a classic style it is an excellent and easy look to recreate at home. Combining our red, "The Virgin's Robe" with the deep inky blue "St.Peter's boat" and chalky white "Wedding shawl" either on the walls or by repainting some furniture you will very quickly build up a strong theme. Add some natural timber, straw baskets and some crisp white linen and you will be there. You may be lucky enough to pick up a vintage storm light or a few lighthouse prints or nautical maps at auction and you will be well on your way to living the boat house dream!

Many thanks to Pedlars for the photograph.
