Inspiration from 1950's Childrens books including Moomintroll by the Finnish Tove Jansson. During times of instability and uncertainty we seem to balance ourself with a nostalgic look back at childhood.
One of the quickest way to do that is revisit brightly coloured children's books. Look at the superb books published in the 1950's. Their images are so powerful you are instantly reminded of the place and the occasion they were read to you - you can remember how the book smelt, your favourite illustrations. Infact you feel so comforted by them that you read them to your own children and they become a link through generations.
With interior trends looking at nature, sustainability and vintage chic, you can see colours lifted straight from books such as the cult series of Moomintroll books illustrated & written by the Finnish Tove Jansson. She said that WW2 had depressed her and she needed to write of innocence and naivety... and she did – she transported millions of readers into a fantastical Northern environment stuffed with magical colour. Joanna Lumley recently said as a child she was so fascinated with the illustrations of the Northern Lights in her Jansson's books (while growing up in hot Africa) that it became her lifetimes obsession to see the Aourla Borealis and travel in the far north to experience the special Northern colours.
