Going for gold

Meet Craig. He is an arctic explorer, hairy and tough. In 2001 he scaled an unmapped mountain in Greenland. In 2004 he walked 730 miles to the South Pole. In 2006 he walked to the North Pole.

Fast forward to June 2009 and he is off kayaking around Greenland delivering laptops to Inuit communities so they can link up with children in Scottish schools to discuss climate change. You will therefore understand that we are talking of a 100% man.

Now comes the dichotomy. For this forthcoming expedition, Craig has had a bespoke, 18 foot long, extremely narrow kayak made. On asking what colour he wanted the kayak finished in you might expect him to say kakhi, brown or blue. Wrong. Craig's new kayak is mimosa yellow with the addition of gold sparkles! He says, "I fancied something shiny so I opted for gold metallic flakes". You can read more of this expedition on www.northernlights-expeditions.org

Follow the gold rush in interiors right now. Check out the "Bedside Gun" lamp designed by Philippe Starck available at www.designshopuk.com

No more "dull room syndrome", add shimmer to a single wall and contrast it with a flat matt on the remaining walls. For a sophisticated & chic look try Valtti's new "luna" paint from the Taika range. It's a warm silver based paint and has extraordinary light reflecting properties. This "ecolux" paint is low in VOC (volatile organic compounds) and is extremely bewitching. The effect has been used in the new ultra-hip Sunset Lounge roof- top bar in the new Mondrian Hotel in Miami www.mondriansouthbeach.com
