One of the most interesting seminars I attended at 100% Design this year was given by Justine Fox of Global Color Research .
Justine explained the process they use to predict global trends. Twice a year she invites leading designers from various industries from around the world to the Global Color Research offices to take part in a day creating mood boards. They use a huge variety of mediums to create the boards and at the end of the day they hang all the boards and look to see if a particular colour or theme emerges.
If a certain colour appears in all the boards, they predict a trend in that direction. Working at least two years ahead they are able to give manufactures this information in time for them to gear up their plant to produce products in the colour that the consumer demands.
She went on to talk about various trends for 2011 including a theme she called “Whisper” which contains a soft, smoky palette. Whisper she says, “draws inspiration from transparent and fluid elements of nature” and offers “a dream-like state to escape”. Other themes included, “Spirit” using fresh colours, rustic textures and crafted objects. “Genteel” with classic neutrals highlighted with scarlet and gold and “Risk” focusing on toxic colours with a science fiction reference! Looks like we are in for some interesting trends!
Global Color Research produce Mix Magazine where you can read further about future trends.
