The expanding city of Ljubjana, Slovenia is an expanding city which is slowly engulfing many of the surrounding historical rural settlements.

Planners were concerned the encroachment was causing rural settlements to loose some of their quality and character. To combat the problem, planners proposed new development should follow traditional village layout, in other words, a condensed core with a main road acting as a spinal cord through the village and internal roads, ribs, branching out into residential streets. Surrounding the villages, an area of green belt was proposed.

OFIS architects were asked to design affordable, low cost housing to regenerate the village of Podpec . As a result the village has attracted young families and has brought back much needed vitality to the community. It is great to see planners tackling the problem of urban sprawl, taking note of traditional practices and thus preserving the fabric of the community.

The affordable housing pictured above are constructed of concrete & brick with larch wood, plaster and glass facings.
