Ever wanted to create a still life in your kitchen? With world renowned architect David Chipperfield's new range of kitchenware for Alessi , you can do just that.

His range named "tonale" was launched at Macef , the international home show in Milan, earlier this year. It comprises of a collection of objects including, plates, bowls and cups made from a variety of materials such as earthenware, glass and wood.

David Chipperfield was inspired by Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) who focused on subtle gradations of hue, tone and balance in his still life paintings. Morandi's work was noted for its simplicity of execution and he became known as an important forerunner of Minimalism. Aside from the Morandi influence, you will see from the collection that Chipperfield has also taken note of vernacular ceramics from the East.

As Morandi famously said, "It takes me weeks to make up my mind which group of bottles will go well with a particular coloured tablecloth", you may want to allocate more time to set the table with tonale!

David Chipperfield will be exhibiting at the Design Museum later in 2009.

Many thanks to David Chipperfield for the photograph.
