An Unexpected Extension

Picture in your mind New York's dynamic Blue Man Group and then try to imagine a building equivalent and you will be close to visualising the incredible Didden Village in Rotterdam.
When the Didden family asked imaginative, Dutch based architects MVRDV to extend their home, not only did they get a set of new bedrooms but they gained an entire mini village! The extension, which is constructed on the roof of their existing house, comprises bedrooms all built as separate mini houses interlinked by a series of mini streets and plazas.
Unifying the new "village" with a bright blue poly-urethane coating makes for a stark contrast to the buildings around creating a "new heaven" on the skyline of Rotterdam.
This exciting building certainly has stage presence and could be the start of a whole new roof top community!
Many thanks to MVRDV for the photograph. Copyright Rob 't Hart.
