If you are thinking of changing the colour scheme of your house, make sure it will fit in with the surrounding buildings, especially if your home is semi-detached.

Before you start

Make sure the surfaces you are going to paint are stable (not loose and flaky and not chalky to touch). Make any repairs to your walls and fix gutters before you start.

Paint a house in this order:

  • Start from the top down
  • Paint doors and windows last
  • Bargeboards, fascias and sofits
  • Gutters and downpipes
  • House walls
  • Brick walls
  • Windows
  • Tiled sills
  • Painted doors
  • Varnished weatherboarding
  • Painted weatherboarding
