Cleaning paintbrushes

Always buy the best quality paintbrushes you can afford and look after them well.

Check on the paint tin what kind of solvent is needed to clean your brushes. Emulsion and acrylic paints only need plenty of water. Other paints may need white spirit to get them clean.

Cleaning a brush:

  • Gently remove any excess paint from the brush
  • Wash emulsion paint off a brush under a running tap
  • Rub a little washing-up liquid into the bristles
  • Rinse in clean water
  • Shake off excess water
  • When dry, place a rubber band over the bristles to keep in shape
