Painting ceilings
Recommended products:
We normally recommend you use a matt product on ceilings.
Before you start
Make sure you are easily able to reach the ceiling you are painting. This may seem obvious, but balancing or over reaching on a ladder that is too low could cause a serious accident and can also lead to you applying the product less evenly. If this happens over the large surface area of your ceiling, the final result will look patchy and unfinished.
Use a scaffold board supported by trestles on a flat, even surface. Another option is to use a roller with an extension handle. In order to make a neat line where your walls and ceiling meet, you will still need to stand on a ladder or scaffold.
If the ceiling has been painted before you can usually just paint over the old paint. Make sure your floor is fully covered with paint sheets to avoid drips staining your floor. With waterborne products, if you do get a little drip, just wipe off with a damp sponge immediately and crack on.
Painting ceilings
- Your head should be about 7.5cm from the ceiling while you are painting
- Paint in strips starting near the window
- Clean your tools after use and store sealed to keep dust off
- If you are continuing to paint the following day, put the paint roller or brush in a plastic bag and seal tightly overnight.
