Stencil painting

If you are looking for a way to create stunning visual effects on your interior walls then stencilling is the answer.

Big, bold, striking patterns can be created quickly and easily using stencils. You can create a room that reflects your individuality and style, and best of all, stencils are cheap to make.

You can decide by yourself how you want to use them. You can pattern a whole surface, paint just one pattern, or use patterns in groups, just as you find them in nature.

It’s easier than you think, and there is no need to worry about failure. If a pattern doesn’t work out, you can simply paint over it. Paint in layers and use both strong and weak contrasts.

Stencilling Guide

  • Fill any holes and cracks before painting the wall with a suitable colour and allow to dry
  • Plan the stencil pattern layout thoroughly before starting work
  • Plan the stencil sequence if you intend painting several colours on top of each other.

Before you start

  • Fill any holes and cracks before painting the wall with a suitable colour and allow to dry

  • Plan the stencil sequence if you intend painting several colours on top of each other.

Painting a symmetrically repetitive pattern

  • Make stencil-positioning marks to ensure that the pattern is even
  • Measure the distance between the positioning marks, and mark lightly with a pencil
  • Move the stencil to the next position and align it with the marks made for the previous pattern.

Painting your stencil pattern

  • For best results we use a foam stippling brush
  • Use masking tape to fix the stencil along all its outside edges
  • Use less paint than you need, rather than too much
  • Dip the foam stippling brush in paint, remove any excess paint
  • Gently press the foam brush within the stencil image and coat carefully
  • Repeat the process if the coat of paint appears to be too thin or if you want to add another colour on top of the previous one.
