Painting interior windows

Remember, if you are redecorating a whole room you should paint the ceiling and walls first, then move on to the windows and other woodwork.

Painting windows takes quite a long time since you need to work slowly taking care not to get paint on the glass. Start early in the day so they can be closed for security at night.

Recommended products

Before you start

  • Put down a paint sheet
  • Use masking tape to protect the glass

TIP – leave a slight gap so that a thin line of paint goes onto the glass (this seals any gap between the glass and the frame).

Painting casement frames

  • Open the window
  • Do not apply too much paint in one coat
  • Brush strokes should follow the construction of the joinery
  • Vertical brush strokes will ‘cut off’ horizontal ones
  • Keep paint off handles and stays

Painting sash windows

  • Almost close the window to paint the inside runners
  • Give runners a very thin coat of paint to prevent sticking
  • Do not paint the sash cords

TIP – on old sash and case windows it is better to use an oil-bound product like VALTTI Teho, the reason being that oil-bound products slide over each other more freely than water-based products.

TIP – the higher the gloss level, the better the surfaces will slide, so on areas of contact use a gloss, not a matt or a semi matt.
